Originally, to start with google AdSense you need 900-1000 visitors per day. After getting on this traffic you can start earning money with AdSense. The reason why google pays with AdSense is advertisement, that google starts to share with you and you get paid for advertisement and companies get revenue for them by google AdSense service now.

And you also have choices to choose from leader board to small squares, large square and other sizes. Different sizes give you opportunity to speed up or lessen your earning. Your earnings depend on size of your ad. For example by selecting a bigger size banner you will be able to get notified more easily and this will cause more increment in your earning, thus you can select what you want to earn.
Another thing in Google AdSense is the beauty of sharing. From your earnings the beauty of your blog will not be affected, because AdSense provides us options to select ads according to our own wish and our own desired colors.
